A Virtual Heritage Case Study: A Modern Approach to the Revival of Ancient Historical or Archeological Sites Through Application of 3D Real-Time Computer Graphics

چکیده
This paper presents the case study of a real-time interactive digital narrative visualisation of the Namaz Pray of a simulated Ottoman Imam in the 16 century virtually restored mosque of Küçük Aya Sofya (previous St. Sergius and Bacchus church) as well as in the Hagia Sophia mosque (previous cathedral of Hagia Sophia), in Istanbul, Turkey. This case study illustrates that the abandonment of traditional concepts of static cultural artefacts with interactive, augmented historical character-based narrative representations, can propel virtual reconstructions of cultural heritage sites to an exciting new edutainment medium. Furthermore, a reconstruction and real-time immersive visualisation is presented by simulating these edifices both as churches (original form) and as mosques, fully respecting the archaeological, historical and architectural premises.

43 Abstract—Real-time virtual heritage application is normally executed with a high performance computer system. This is due to the complexity and highly computational cost which makes such system impossible to run in a lower specification computer system. Therefore, many developed virtual heritage application cannot be retrieved by the target users. One of the factors that contribute to the hi...
متن کاملVirtual Reality - A Knowledge Tool for Cultural Heritage
Based in the experience of building 3D representations of Mesoamerican archeological sites, we will discuss the need to integrate an understanding of the actual state of the ruins, i.e. the initial building and later transformations that affect the site, in order to construct quality models. An archeological survey cannot rely solely on computer science techniques but must include knowledge of ...

The paper will discuss the problematic approach of ancient landscape reconstruction, stressing the importance of data and information sharing through the web. Thanks to new possibilities offered by Open Source approach and, in specific, by some tools, such as Virtual Terrain and OpenSceneGraaph, it’s now possible to construct a web-based shared system, allowing users and experts to interact dyn...

This paper presents the results of an interdisciplinary project aiming at the virtual three-dimensional reconstruction of the stronghold Dillenburg, which has been completely destroyed in 1768. For an interactive virtual exploration, a high-quality 3D model was generated in close cooperation between local historians and scientists from the field of Computer Graphics based on a collection of anc...
